We’re heading to D.C. next week and are opening up some events to the public. We’ll have an open cocktail hour and three lunch-time roundtables—and you’re invited.

And it’s not too late to join our workshops in D.C. Registration closes Friday, so hurry.

Wednesday Cocktail Hour in D.C.: OPEN TO ALL

We’re having a cocktail party and everyone is invited. It’s all very 1999. Our good friends at Interactive Applications Group have offered to host us in their beautiful studio space. Please stop by, say hello, and meet folks in the D.C. area who enjoy both user-centered design and a good beer.

Wednesday, August 20, 2003, 6 p.m. - 8 p.m.

Lunch-Time Roundtables at the Watergate: OPEN TO ALL

These Roundtables are open to everyone. Whether you’re attending this year’s workshop or not, you’re invited. All Roundtables will be in the Mount Vernon Suite at the Watergate Hotel. Directions are here.

Please write to bryan@adaptivepath.com if you have any questions.

Tuesday, August 19, noon to 1 p.m.

“Good Work with No Budget”
Lane Becker and Jeffrey Veen

Through our experience with several not-for-profit organizations (NPR, PBS, Electronic Frontier Foundation, Creative Commons, and so on), Adaptive Path has helped Web teams consider effective, yet affordable tactics for user research, testing, personas, and scenarios. This roundtable will be an open discussion of how we, and you, have found creative ways to innovate in spite of limited budgets. Open to all.

Wednesday, August 20, noon to 1 p.m.

“Redesigning the Design Process”
Workshop Alumni and AP Partners

As a learning exercise for us and for you, we’ll invite workshop alumni to stop by and talk through the challenges, successes, and future hurdles of implementing a user-centered design strategy. We’ve invited our friends from PBS, NPR, The Washington Post, Ingenium, CTB-McGraw Hill, and others to talk about what they learned in 2002 and what it looks like in 2003. Open to all.

Thursday, August 21, noon to 1 p.m.

“Ideas and Deliverables”
Dan Brown and Peter Merholz

Short of selling their service, the greatest challenge faced by user experience practitioners is communicating their ideas to customers. In the early stages, a user experience is nothing more than a collection of abstract concepts. In later stages, it can still be difficult to visualize how everything works. In this roundtable discussion, we’ll explore various ways of communicating user experience concepts to customers. Open to all.

Dan Brown is a frequent contributor to Boxes and Arrows and leads the Information Design and Content Management group within the office of e-Government for the Transportation Security Administration.

Jeff, Janice, Lane, and Jesse speaking at Seybold

Adaptive Path partners Jeffrey Veen, Janice Fraser, Lane Becker, and Jesse James Garrett are heading over to the Moscone Center to this year’s Seybold-WOW Web Design and Development Conference.

Come on over and see us:

“Managing Design Politics”

Tuesday, September 9
Janice Fraser and Lane Becker

We’ll offer practical tactics for creating a user-centered organizational culture, and show you how to present user-focused customer experience as a vital, short-term process with immediate value.

“How to Spend Less and Get More From Usability Testing”

Tuesday, September 9
Jeffrey Veen

We’ll show you why a user-centered design approach is important to developing your Web site, where to find those users, how to plan and conduct a test, and what to look for when you’re done. And most importantly, we’ll show you how to do it all yourself, on a minimal budget.

And Jesse James Garrett will be taking questions and meeting folks at the WOW booth at the Seybold Conference from 10:30 to 11 a.m. Tues, September 8. Stop by, meet Jesse, and ask him some tough questions.
