Update: UX Leadership Model

A few weeks ago I wrote a post about a model for UX Leadership.

Turns out that Will Evans’s model (which I flagrantly appropriated) actually took a lot of inspiration from another model—one created by David Sherwin and Justin Maguire, of frog design.

So I wanted to update the model to include proper attribution, and while I’m at it, point you to David and Justin’s original presentation for the Seattle AIGA chapter (where this model was originally presented). Beyond the big pyramid, it’s jam-packed with lots of other interesting, actionable information about design leadership. My favorites…

  • The original pyramid model (slides 31-32)
  • The “egg system.” A.k.a., how to critique a design (slides 41-42)
  • A job description for a design leader (28)
  • Different kinds of briefs for use at various points in the project (slide 46)

David and Justin’s presentation also does a good job of addressing some of the feedback from my first post: that it doesn’t go up high enough, that it doesn’t address how you grow design laterally in an organization, etc.  So please, go forth and check it out!

This is excellent! Thank you very much. Another issue I’d like to add is about the various types of possible career paths for design leadership. These opportunities may vary depending on the type or values of the organization—design consultancy, product firm, large corporate, etc. For example, I have worked for companies where you have to manage people in order to be very senior, but in one other very large IT company you could be a senior thought leader, which is a different track. This company had the notion that there are people who are brilliant and add lots of value but will never be good people managers, and vice versa.—Millicent Cooley, www.economist.com
