Steven Johnson, an Original Inspirer

In 1998, I launched my personal site, peterme.com, largely devoted to interface design criticism. In October of that year, I wrote up a recommended reading list (which for a while was my most post popular page.) Among the books recommended are Steven Johnson’s Interface Culture about which I wrote, “Perhaps the first book of interface design criticism, made all the more revealing because its author, Steven Johnson, isn’t a designer himself… His book has inspired much of the writing and thought you see on my site.”

Two years later, I moderated a panel at SXSW titled Interface Culture, which Steven graciously participated in.

Steven has since gone on to become even more renowned, a darling of the Edge.org and Emerging Technology crowd, a featured guest on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.

So I hope you’ll forgive the self-promotional aspect of this post as I point your attention to Adaptive Path’s 2006 User Experience Week, where Steven is giving the plenary on the opening day. We’ve asked him to revisit Interface Culture ten years later, which should be interesting considering what he’s been doing in the meantime. It will be a bit of a homecoming for me, and I’m totally looking forward to it.
