Most Hated Internet Terms?

This morning, Yahoo!‘s homepage featured a story on the most hated Internet words. It got me thinking about the terms that we hear abused all the time. “Blog”, “netiquette”, “cookie” and “wiki” have been voted among the most irritating words spawned by the Internet. Any additions to the short list?

and of course

Web 2.0

I think the most irritating tend to be portmanteaus (portmanteaux?). “Wiki” doesn’t bother me at all—it doesn’t strive to be clever, it’s just a word borrowed from Hawaiian and simplified. “Webitable” would be irritating :-)

Wait, ‘blog’ is irritating, but no ‘blogosphere’? Isn’t that more irritating?

They should start a Silicon Valley based ‘words you never want to hear again’ (VC, startup, etc. etc.)

Widgets. Old terms that I still hear that irk me are “hot links” and “email blast”.

Definitely “leverage”. We leverage our content and our websites. We leverage our market share and our customer lists. We leverage the popularity of our blogs and our presence on YouTube. We even leverage our web stats when we turn it into reports. Oh boy. Why can’t we simply “use” all of these things? Who are we trying to impress? It’s enough to make you want to add “-leverage” to your Google searches :-)

It’s definitely “Web 2.0” out of the mouth of managers who speak of it in terms of “you know, the NEW internet version”. I hear this 10 times a day.

Assuming that most of us web professionals are used to these terms, it’s an interesting list because it shows how we “hide” behind certain terms, at least for “regulars” users. “Blog” and “wiki” will surely be terms that internet users need to become familiar with ...

I can’t believe that after all the controversy, “AJaX” didn’t make it on Adaptive Path’s list!

Also, I could spend the rest of my life without hearing “back end” ever again and be perfectly happy.
