Basecamp Tips & Tricks

We’ve been using Basecamp for quite a while now. In order to make it do what we want, it sometimes takes a little encouragement and some hacks.

Things like making use of the existing CSS code to stylize your messages, or using Ajax to dynamically hide and show images to embedding Google calendars and video. Sometimes these little enhancements help you communicate your ideas more effectively.

I’ve created a free Basecamp site that has examples and the code that we’ve collected. Feel free to use and tweak as needed. If you have any others, or better ways of doing something, leave a comment here or in the Basecamp Sandbox below.

Man, it’s great to hear that at least some people able to manage projects in Basecamp. I’ve tried it and it turned out to be a great communication tool, but as for project management it really sucks. I especially hated the situation when you client has his own Basecamp account. It’s a mere nightmare! Oh well… I’m using Wrike now, suits my team and clients a lot better.

I launched a collaborative productivity tool on Facebook.com last month called MyOffice.  It’s a great place to work with friends, keep a meeting/event schedule, upload and share files, assign and track tasks, and discuss.  We’ve also provided a dashboard for each project that keeps you up to speed, as well as a master dashboard that gives you the most important updates from all of your projects.  I encourage you to check it out. <a href=“http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/myoffice_full_featured_groupware_for_facebook.php#more” title=“Read about MyOffice on ReadWriteWeb” rel=“nofollow”>

I use Basecamp for several projects. Altought its very straight forward and easy to use - it’s not that “instant” as it could be. I don’t want to open a new Basecamp project for a meeting with my alumni friends. I want a simpler yet more instant tool. I’m working on a project called “activities” where them main focus is set to I call it “instant collaboration”. It’s kind of a 37singals writeboard but with todo and commeting included. Access is without passwords, and you can open more than one activity. Each activity you can share with different people. If you like to check out the early beta version - visit www.netnode.ch/activities, I’m open for feedback!

The username and password do not work: guest and guest. Really interesting in seeing the tips! Thanks
