CHI Favorite: Spirituality and Emerging Markets

by Rachel Hinman on April 9th, 2008

Susan P Wyche of Georgia Institute of Technology presented a paper Re-Placing Faith: Reconsidering the Secular-Religious Use Divide in the United States and Kenya. The presentation focused on a study she conducted in Nairobi, Kenya. She referenced compelling statistics about the growth of Pentecostal Christian faith in Africa. Using compelling growth statistics, she made the case that in order to understand emerging markets, it is necessary to understand the role faith and spirituality play in the lives of people in these markets.

She also shared how the use of sketching in her fieldwork proved helpful in the questioning process. One audience member explained it best in that we often view design as a method or a process to inform system building. However, in this case, design proved a useful method in deciding what should and should not be designed.

The sketches Susan used in the field opened up a dialogue with the the research participants. They provided an opportunity for participants to reflect and discuss how the depicted ideas would fit into their world view.

I’ve heard of sketches being used in the field to provide insight into acceptance or perceived usefulness of a concept. Susan’s paper provides evidence of another use: sketching as a method for gaining cultural understanding.

Internships at Adaptive Path

by Henning Fischer on January 27th, 2008

The weather in San Francisco is especially atrocious today. It’s the kind of cold rain that makes you wish it were summer. We’re looking forward to it not only because it means more sunshine and a vague increase in temperature, but also because it means we will be joined by this year’s interns.

Over the past few years Adaptive Path has hired a few rockstars for a 10 week summer internship, and this year is no different. We’re looking for people that have expertise, experience and passion for one (or more) of the following: interaction design, information architecture, design strategy or design research.

Summer isn’t the only time we host interns. We also offer 3-6 month internships to individuals with the aforementioned qualifications. These positions are on an ongoing basis.

For complete internship details, head over here.

As part of a project team, you will work alongside project leads, project managers and practitioners on client facing projects. We work hard to place you on projects that match their expertise, experience and interests. In addition, interns may participate in Adaptive Path research and development projects. Past projects have included Charmr and Measure Map.

Summer internships begin June 2 and go through August 15. The end of the summer internship will coincide with UX Week, August 12-15, which interns are invited to attend.

We’re looking forward to hearing from you.

We’re looking for contract interaction designers

by peterme on April 5th, 2007

We have some marvelous opportunities for contract interaction designers… And, as hiring managers out there know, finding such folks is challenging right now. So, we thought we’d use our blog.

We’d prefer folks to be located in the SF Bay Area.

We’re looking for part- to full-time Interaction Designers (15-30 hrs/week), comfortable with iterative prototyping alongside fellow designers, a business team, and front-end developers. Adaptive Path is working with forward-thinking clients looking to radically alter their customer-facing web experiences.

We’re looking for a team member who can: participate in in-person research activities, help lead idea generation workshops, and create mock-ups and prototypes to help design the way forward.

Together, we’ll create interactive visions and strategies for organizations ready to move towards web 2.0. Includes occasional travel and frequent on-site work at Adaptive Path. Project lengths vary.

If interested, please email jobs AT adaptivepath DOT com.

Adaptive Path seeks experienced visual designer

by peterme on January 25th, 2007

Adaptive Path is looking for an experienced visual designer to establish our visual design practice.

The best candidate for this role is frustrated with current standard visual design practice. Someone who appreciates the true value that design can bring, and is dissatisfied settling for “cool.” Someone who values substance over style, someone who appreciates when the image should be front and center, and when it should get out of the way.

Also, someone who wants to never feel like they’ve been simply reduced to delivering .PSDs.

A visual designer at Adaptive Path will engage in all aspects of the design process, and will be instrumental in developing and communicating strategic direction, research insights, and vision concepts. Additionally, visual designers at Adaptive Path engage in more traditional activities such as brand identity and logo development, and graphic design for print and interactive. In addition, the ideal candidate will help build Adaptive Path’s visual design capability across interactive, mobile, and print.
