Greetings from the future
by petermeFor a project I’m working on, we have the fortune of interviewing experts and thought leaders on the topic of the future of media. Among the subjects were Julian Bleecker, currently working with Nokia in their Design Strategic Projects Studio. We asked him about the future, and about design, and he said something I really enjoyed:
“Designers already live in the future. Through our work, we’re pulling the present up to us.”

I can’t believe there is a cadre of solipsists committed to such flatulent hubris. All religious fundamentalists also live in the future and make just as much sense. All I ask is, Please, please don’t pull me up to your febrile fantasies. I really like the present.

@BJMe–
Hi, dad. Do designers have egos, and the gall to think they can imagine a better world? Yes. That’s why we do what we do? We’re frustrated with the present and want to improve on it. Same as engineers, physicians, and many other professions that invent what’s next.
And, being your son, I know that you actually enjoy being pulled up, in fact, more than most. Whether in serious matters of health care, or less grave concerns such as entertainment technology (weren’t you among the first with a VCR, and don’t you love your HD teleivsion), you have repeatedly benefited from the efforts of those dissatisfied with the current situation. The “present” that you claim to really like was, not long ago, the future that designers and inventors made available to you.
