New Help System in Leopard

by Andrew Crow

Leopard never ceases to surprise me with all the little enhancements to the OS. Today, I was using an app (Panic’s new CandyBar) and wanted some help on the new Dock changing feature. I went to the Help menu item and entered “dock”.

I noticed a new category in the Help results called “Menu Items”. When I moused over these results, a blue arrow appeared showing me the location of these items in the Menu.

I’m not going to over analyze this, I just thought it was cool. It brings some context to help items right when you need it and is not overly obnoxious if you select it by accident. Good work, Apple.

What I can’t figure out (that these screenshots clearly illustrate) is why the blue highlight is such a horrible, horrible color, even though the Blue option in Appearance Prefs is so nice?

Dan, that’s true. The Blue color that the OS uses for it’s menu item highlights are vastly different that the sliders and pull down menus. This new blue is much more saturated and harsh.

This is a great feature, but I just tried it out in Safari and noticed that the blue arrow was pointing at the wrong menu item (start typing in “Mail Contents” and it will point to “Save As”). If you are going to do something so drastic, make sure you get it right!
