Latest Essay: Demystifying Data Analysis

by Rachel Hinman

Last March I co-lead a project that explored interaction models and interfaces for accessing the internet on a mobile phones. We conducted field research in the US and Hong Kong — 16 people total — in order to understand how people currently use their mobiles to access internet content. Analyzing the data was no small task. Having a data analysis process that I could communicate to the team and the client was critical to the success of the research and is the topic of my first AP essay: Demystifying Data Analysis.

    Great reading!

What I like about this is the being able to communicate the mountains of data into a story that easy for clients to understand.

Are you finding clients are getting more comfortable with simpler communication pieces vs longer reports (that no one reads)

that’s a tough one - it really depends on the client, how controversial the finding are and the nature of the organization. getting a sense of that from clients upfront helps.

i will say that i’ve found the ideal situation is to have the client directly involved in the field interviews and data analysis process. they become spokespeople for the work within their organization.

We find that clients appreciate being given the more detailed data but rarely have time to read it. So finding more ways to communicate key findings through diagrams, photos, pictures, screen shots, wire frames (anything that helps tell a story). Agree this is dependent largely on the team you are working with and the greater corporate culture.
