AP in Hong Kong
by Rachel Hinman
Todd Elliott and I are in Hong Kong this week doing some mobile research. We met up with AP’s “man in Hong Kong” - Daniel Szuc and his wife Josephine Wong last night (seen in this photo). They treated us to a Beijing-style feast and then the traditional Hong Kong AP visit to Krispy Kreme after. Jo and Daniel are quite possibly, the nicest people in Hong Kong. Smart, funny, knowledgeable, generous… you two are the best.
TNS, our recruiting agency, has also been helpful in finding great recruits in a short time frame. Briggitta Lau, our main contact, is on it — finding 14 potential candidates in less than a week. They have extensive connections in the US and Asia and have worked miracles for us in the last week.
Admittedly our first interview was a little rough — a conference room in the hotel, the participant was a little scared — it’s always a little disappointing when things don’t flow. I’ve done enough interviews in the US to know that every now and again, you just get participants who are…well… a “dud”. Somebody who is just difficult to talk to, hard to get information from. I wasn’t sure with this interview. Maybe it was because he was a guy. Maybe it was because he was scared. Maybe it was the formality of the conference room. Maybe it was cultural. Somehow that cultural barrier was something that didn’t sink in until I actually experienced it. Humbling.

Today, I visited the Big Buddha on Lantau Island. Being a midwestern girl at heart, I’m not too into meditation and all …. but I have to say that the visit helped me feel a little more at ease, a little more focused, and well — a little more hopeful. My big hope today is that I can connect with the people who are opening up their lives and their homes to me this week. Looking forward to it….
