More on scaling the Starbucks experience…

by peterme

We wrote about it last week, and today the Los Angeles Times offers a thoughtful opinion on “Starbucks’ ‘venti’ problem”.

I’m not finding fault with this article as a simple description of the existing conditions of some certain business venues, but I don’t read it as meaningful lesson of what any of the mentioned companies should have done or should do in the future. I read it as an armchair review of chosen examples to suggest a thesis, but does not propose any plan of action.

I don’t know exactly what “scaling” is, but I do know ” big”. I remember neighborhood markets, bakeries, service stations. That’s a good one: service stations; Sohio. Free air, water and fuel pumping at about ten cents a gallon. There’s been a lot of big and merging going on since those days. And no complaints from the stockholders.

Trader Joe’s is cute, but MacDonald’s is beautiful.
