Gimme Super Powers!
by DanAdaptive Path founder Mike Kuniavsky has written a bit about magic being the new metaphor for technologies like ubiquitous computing. As for me, forget magic. It involves too much learning and is too, well, mysterious. Me, I’ll take a super power any day instead.
This is what I don’t get about most immersive online experiences. I don’t particularly want an rich(er) online life unless I get super powers. Why would I want to set up a store or go shopping? I can do that in my offline life. In my online life, I want to do things I can’t do IRL. I want to be better than myself–or at least different than myself. Because of this, I understand the appeal of World of Warcraft or City of Heroes so much more.
Adaptive Path is working on a project now where the only apt metaphor for a certain action is “going invisible.” You can even “go back in time” and “make yourself invisible.” To me, that’s not magic: that’s full-on X-Men-style super powers. And I want some.
