The Next Ten Years of Design
by DanAt this week’s Design Thinkers 2006 conference, I was on a two-man panel with Adam Greenfield on the topic “Where is Design Taking Us?” The conversation veered mostly into a discussion about design ethics, but one there was one strong nugget of wisdom that I’d like to note. It came out of a discussion on ubiquitous computing. I’m paraphrasing:
DS: Let me ask you this: do you think the challenge for designers in the next ten years is to make the invisible, visible?
AG: Actually, I think there are two major challenges: making the invisible visible, like in ubi comp systems. And the second challenge is the opposite: making the visible, invisible. Taking 19th and 20th century technology (like this microphone system) and having it disappear into our natural behavior.
Cool.
